BAPTISM BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

( You will need a candle for each child (their own baptismal candle if available) and suggest a small shell for each for holy water. Have a copy of the prayer service for each adult )   Suggested music:  “Come to the Water”

Leader:  A reading from the gospel according to Mark.

Today we remember the symbol of water (each child dips their fingers in the holy water carried by the birthday celebrants in the shells) in which we are immersed with Christ in death and rise-up with him in resurrection.  (Everyone joins in the sign of the cross) We remember our Baptism In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

                  All:  Amen

Leader:  We remember the symbol of light (each celebrant is given a candle to hold) in which we recall the light of Christ sending us forth in him to be lights in our world today.   (Repeat the following form for each child – one at a time)

(When each child has been celebrated continue. . . .)

Leader:  In our Baptism we remember the Apostles’ Creed:

      All:

 I believe in God,

the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth,

and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;

from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and life everlasting. Amen.

Leader:  We remember the words of Psalm 140 as we celebrate _______, ______ and ________________ today:

            You formed my inmost being

                 you knit me in my mother’s womb

            I praise you, so wonderfully you made me,

                 wonderful are your works!

All:   AMEN

** notes: Prayer service designed to include parents/family. In a class it works well to celebrate monthly any children with a ‘Baptism Birthday’ in that month.  Send invitations to parents well ahead of time and invite them to bring their child’s original baptismal candle if possible.  Consider setting up a prayer space and inviting the families to bring a picture or memento from the day to include in the sacred space.  If feasible, celebrate with a special snack after the prayer service.  Invite the families to share memories and stories from that special day.

"On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: 'Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you'..."

"En la boca del catequista vuelve a resonar siempre el primer anuncio: 'Jesucristo te ama, dio su vida para salvarte, y ahora está vivo a tu lado cada día, para iluminarte, para fortalecerte, para liberarte'..."
